FIX: Windows 8.1 solution to: Where is my “add a wireless display” option?

Just came back from a great MVP conference at Microsoft Redmond. Everything at this conference so I cant share any details. Instead I will share something completely different and not reated to Project Online.

I took the time to buy the great new piece of hardware called “Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor”, which allows all devices with Windows 8 and 8.1. to project their screen without any cables. Perfect and what every man should wish for this Christmas!

Installing the little device was very simple – just plugged it into my projector. Getting my Surface (Windows 8.1) to project was much harder.

Problem:
You are told to just click on you “devices” button, hit “project” and then “add wireless adaptor”. Problem is that button is just not there.

Solution:
The solution is simple but took me a lot of time to figure out, as the product is brand new and don’t have its own blog. That is why I will share the answer here. It turned out it was all related to my Surface Pro 3 having a Cisco VPN client installed.

FIX: Navigate to your WIFI network setup and remove “Deterministic Network Enhancer”. Go back to your devices and projector page – now you will find the “add wireless adaptor”. Easy and I hope I just saved you some hours of troubleshooting.

  1. Hi, I do have the same problem, no “add wireless display” option. My notebook uses an Intel Wireless AC 7260 adapter but there is no “Deterministic network enhancer” property to uncheck. Any ideas on how to make the “add wireless display” option appear ? Thank you and it’s a pity that the obvious solution, CALL MICROSOFT, is absolutely useless !!!!

  2. Hi admin, i found this post on 24 spot in google’s search results.
I’m sure that your low rankings are caused by high bounce rate.
This is very important ranking factor. One of the biggest reason for high bounce rate is due to visitors hitting the back button. The higher your bounce rate the
further down the search results your posts and pages will end up, so
having reasonably low bounce rate is important for increasing your
rankings naturally. There is very handy wordpress plugin which can help you.
    Just search in google for:
    Seyiny’s Bounce Plugin

  3. Hi Peter
I just got and setup my netgear in my new smart tv and in the corresponding hdmi channel appear the “ready to connect”^ message.
I try to configure my sansung i7 windows 8.1 like i found in some blog but the “add a wireless display ” is also missing in my using admin user. I already installed all the updates for windows and open the wifi properties i cant find the Deteministic Network Enhancer root of this common problem. I have several virtualbox and vm installed in my machine and appear couple of bridges and unselected both. the driver is a intel centrino advanced-N 6235 and try to connect to the PC2TV hub. Would you please help ?

  4. WOW…thanks for this help! Worked for me right away. Microsoft was no help in resolving this issue. What a hidden problem with the most obscure solution.

  5. You are a god. This totally worked. However this did disable my VPN, which reenabled deterministic network enhancer once I turned it back on. Just FYI for anyone that comes across this problem and deals with VPNs

  6. I know this must sound like a stupid question, but can you clarify how to navigate to the screen shot for the WIFI network setup? I’ve gone into Device Manager, Network Adapters, and properties for the Marvell AVASTAR, but that did not appear to be it, and I don’t see anything for WIFI in device manager.

  7. Not a solution for everyone as I am also in the same boat. No deterministic anything and no VPN and no virtual box… Now what? Figure this out and u help ALOT of people… Trust me. This is absolutely ridiculous.. But it is MS!

    1. Hi Eric,

I must admit I am not using the device anymore as wireless sharing is now built in to most laptops and TVs. On the other hand, it seems to be working without any issues and in a simpler way, as no “in between” device is needed.
