With the summer updates to PowerBI desktop came an update to the security method called “row level”. It is now a bit more easy to ensure, who sees what in a PowerBI report and/or dashboard. Something that will obviously also impact those using Microsoft Project Online and PowerBI. One important thing though, is that this feature requires your users to have a PowerBI PRO subscription. If you are looking for a more dynamic row level filtering on a user level, you can use the ResourceNTAccount from the Project Online ODATA feed “Resources”.
This 5 min video will give you a simple introduction to how you can set up your own security model using the row level method. As an alternative, you can also read the steps in details here.
Hi Peter, awesome post! About your remark “If you are looking for a more dynamic row level filtering on a user level, you can use the ResourceNTAccount from the Project Online ODATA feed “Resources”.”… is it possible to setup rowlevel security based on “ResourceNTAccount=[Current user]”?
Yes it is! You would then need to strip away everything that is not part of the domain account (show only the mail account)
Thanks Peter, I’ll give it a try, probably a nice opportunity to get rid of all the stuff except the email address 😉
